Max Bemis - Songwriter for Hire

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

Talk about tearing down the walls between the artist and the fans. This new project, masterminded by Say Anything lead singer Max Bemis, is taking the concept to a whole new level.

Basically what Max is doing is giving his fans the opportunity to have their very own song written just for them, about whatever it is that they want him to write about. He’s calling it the “Max Bemis Song Shop”. Sound crazy? Maybe. Anyone that knows just how large Say Anything’s fan base is can see how this might become a bit difficult to manage.

“All songs are literally tailored just to you”, Max stated in a video blog he made not to long ago to address the details of the program. “There’s no two songs that’ll be the same”. And in order to reassure us of the quality, he added, “I’m not gonna be writing any crappy songs”.

As loft as a goal as it may seem to be able to pull something like that off, it’s pretty awesome. Even if you’re not a Say Anything fan, know that they do have a very dedicated fan base of kids that will likely go nuts over this. Imagine having your favorite artist of all time write a song specifically for you, and no one else…pretty awesome!

So, what’s the catch? Well, to be honest, $150. That’s the going rate on the Say Anything merch page.  Some might feel that Max is merely doing this to make a few bucks on the side, but honestly I can’t see him ever possibly pulling this off at all without thinning it out a bit. Charging $150 is probably a pretty effective way to weed out frivolous requests so that only those from real, die-hard Say Anything fans get through.

He’s only doing it when he has the time to do it, so don’t expect the offer to be around indefinitely. Today a bulletin was posted from the official Say Anything MySpace account announcing “Max has some free time this week to do a couple more song shop songs”.

If you’re a big Max Bemis fan and you can afford to part with $150, I’d say take advantage of this while you can (and before Max gets sick of writing about girls that other guys are hopelessly in love with).

“Ska is Dead” is Back!

Monday, December 29th, 2008

It pained me to watch the sudden death of ska in the late 90s. Then in 2004, Dave Kirchgessner of the band “Mustard Plug” decided that the ska scene needed to be risen from the dead. Calling in a ton of favors and without the help of any major sponsors, the first “Ska is Dead” tour was planned and successfully executed. Among the bands that participated were Mustard Plug, Planet Smashers, and Big D.

In 2005, they gave the tour another go, this time bringing along MU330 and the legendary Voodoo Glow Skulls. Also on the tour was Streelight Manifesto, who at the time not many people had heard of. The second wave of the “Ska is Dead” tour did even better than the first, selling out many venues along the way. In fact, it went so well that Ska is Dead 3 was planned and took place in the same year. SID 3 included several more bands, including Buck O’ Nine and the Toasters (the longest running ska band in North America).

Unfortunately, 2006, 2007, and 2008 came and went without a Ska is Dead 4 ever happening. Many fans had given up and assumed that ska was now more dead than it ever had been before.

But fear not! Ska is Dead 4 has finally been officially announced and will be kicking off on January 22nd. The first scheduled stop will be at The Launchpad in Albuquerque, NM. Some of the bands you can expect to catch on the various dates of the tour include the Voodoo Glow Skulls, Buck O’ Nine, the Toasters, and of course Mustard Plug.

Click here to get detailed information on tour dates, and stay tuned as they will soon be announcing a second leg of the tour!

White Zombie is a corpse, which happens to make a great gift

Friday, December 26th, 2008

White Zombie, the popular 90’s heavy rock band that is no longer an item, has finally been laid to rest peacefully, in the form of a boxed set.

The boxed set, titled “Let Sleeping Corpses Lie”, was put together by Rob Zombie, who used to be the front-man and lead singer for White Zombie.

The long overdue set includes 4 CD’s and 1 DVD, which all totals up to 63 songs and a load of extremely rare footage that Rob Zombie has held onto for the past decade.

Whether or not you were old enough to listen to White Zombie back in the early 90’s or not, the boxed set is sure to be long-awaited gem for every fan, new or old.

The catchy title of “Let Sleeping Corpses Lie” is something Rob Zombie came up with himself, in an effort to make a statement on the subject of whether or not White Zombie will ever reunite or have a reunion tour; I think it’s safe to say that once something is dead, it is dead for good, especially in this case.

Talking about the compilation, Rob Zombie said that he hopes “Let Sleeping Corpses Die” will feed the longing appetites of the younger generations who are fans of the band, who continue to come along.

He followed up by saying “I can see it, strangely enough, in the royalty checks. Every year, the band makes more money than the last. Hot Topic is now doing a new line of ‘White Zombie’ merchandise. It’s just one of those things that happens, I think. There’s always a new wave of kids who get super-jazzed about a band that’s not around anymore.”

None of us had the chance to say goodbye to the band when they played their last show in 1996, but now, with “Let Sleeping Corpses Lie”, we can finally pay our respects, have closure, and move on.

Kelly Clarkson Coming Back Strong in ‘09

Kelly Clarkson

The American Idol winner turned mega pop star is set to release her fourth album on St. Patrick’s Day. Although it has yet to be named, Kelly Clarkson fans are already buzzing about it.

Soon they will have something to whet their musical appetite. On January 19th, the first single from the new album will be released. Be prepared to hear “My Life Would Suck Without You” on every popular music radio station in heavy rotation.

Like her past three albums, this new album is being released by RCA. Apparently Kelly has had a few battles lately with label executive Clive Davis over who would be writing the majority of the songs on the album. Clarkson wanted to write her own material on this album, but Davis has insisted that she collaborate with other songwriters. This is likely due to the fact that Clarkson’s 2004 album, “Breakaway”, which featured several tracks that were co-written by seasoned songwriters, has sold in excess of 12 million copies (by far the most successful “American Idol” record to date).

After the release of her last album, “My December”, in 2007, the original tour was cancelled due to ticket sales falling short of expectations. It was then replaced with a smaller tour. Kelly Clarkson is expected to tour heavily in support of her new album, but details of the tour have yet to be released.
