Rancid has a New Album on the Way

Monday, March 30th, 2009

It’s been a whole six years since we’ve had any studio releases from the bay area punkers, Rancid. Titled, “Let the Dominoes Fall”, this will be Rancid’s seventh studio album to date, and has a tentative release date of June 2nd. “Dominoes” will be released by Hellcat Records (which is a sister label of Epitaph Records).

Produced by none other than Epitaph founder and Bad Religion guitarist Brett Gurewitz, the new album was recorded at the prestigious Skywalker Sound Studio in San Francisco. As if that weren’t fancy enough, there is even a cameo on the record by Booker T. Williams who laid down some organ. Maybe now that Green Day has proved that punk bands can sell millions of records and live like rockstars without being disowned by their public, fellow bands like Rancid have learned how to indulge themselves with things like Star Wars caliber recording studios and celebrity guests.

Unlike most new albums, “Let the Dominoes Fall” doesn’t sell you short. While many new releases contain only 11 or 12 tracks, this one gives you more bang for your buck with 19 tracks.

If you head over to their MySpace and register your email, you can get the first track for free when it becomes available on April 7th. Check it out here.

TI is Sentenced

Friday, March 27th, 2009

It’s been a long legal road for rapper TI, who was arrested in 2007 for attempting to buy an arsenal of illegal weapons in Atlanta, Georgia. A newer member of his security team had been working in secret with the police and ultimately assisted them in obtaining the necessary evidence to make an arrest.

In order to avoid a lengthy sentence, TI did a substantial amount of charity work and made public appearances to apologize for his actions. Although he could have faced as much as ten years in prison, along with a $250,000 fine for each charge, the judge took all factors into account and sentenced him to one year and one day in federal prison.

TI, aka Clifford Harris, appeared in good spirits in the courtoom. At one point during the 90 minute sentencing, he stated, “I would like to say thank you to some, and apologize to all.”

He will need to report to prison within the next 30-60 days. Which prison he will specifically be assigned to has not yet been revealed.

TI’s most recent album, “Paper Trail”, has sold nearly two million copies worldwide, boasting two #1 singles on the Billboard charts with one more climbing its way to the top currently.

Green Day - Heart Like a Hand Grenade

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

Last night I attended the premiere of the documentary “Heart Like a Hand Grenade”. The film chronicles the making of “American Idiot”, the multi-platinum punk-rock opera released in 2004 by a little band called Green Day.

I wasn’t really sure what to expect. All I knew about it was that it was directed by John Roecker, a close friend of the band, and that the promo poster for the film was animated. Since Roecker in the past made a stop motion film using notable musicians for voice overs (see: Live Freaky, Die Freaky), I didn’t put it past him to have made an animated documentary. I was relieved, however, once I realized that it was not in fact animated.

I must say that Roecker actually did a bang up job. Not that I expected less, I just didn’t really know what to expect at all.

Some folks might expect a high stress environment while such an epic band is recording such an epic album, but that was just not the case. Of course, we don’t get to see everything that editor Dean Gonzalez cut out, but from what we do see, it looks like they were having a blast and getting along just fine the whole time. I think the only thing close to a moment of tension was when Mike Dirnt was struggling with a bass track, and had a small outburst along the lines of “no, everyone is gonna just shut up and I’m going to do this shit”, which was actually pretty funny. No one seemed to take it too seriously.

Another highlight was when Billie Joe suggested that they send some strippers over to Weezer who were also recording in a nearby Hollywood studio. The idea was canned after engineer Doug McKean pointed out that it wouldn’t be worth it since Weezer would be too cheap to return the favor.

I think you’d probably really have to be a Green Day fan to appreciate this documentary. Hearing the songs built from nothing and the band discuss which guitar sounds have “balls” might be a bit boring for someone who doesn’t have a genuine interest in the band. Luckily, Green Day fans are not in short supply.

If taking a peek behind the scenes of the recording of one of the most epic albums to come out in the past decade excites you, or if you’d just like to witness some of Tre Cool’s insane studio antics (such as putting on a Saudi Arabian Thobe and Ghutra and requesting a 50lb bag of Magnesium Sulfate), then Heart Like a Hand Grenade will be well worth watching.

Unfortunately, an official release date has not yet been set.
