Big Things in the Works for Blink-182 According to Mark Hoppus

Mark Hoppus Twitter Pic

It may seem that newly re-formed Blink 182 has been relatively quiet since they announced their reunion at the Grammys, but rest assured, they have all sorts of fun in store for all of you deprived Blink fans.

If you need proof, all you need to do is follow Mark Hoppus on Twitter. Mark does a great job of constantly updating his massive army of followers about what is going on with Blink 182 (as well as a bunch of other stuff).

In fact, just the other day Blink 182 had a three hour photo shoot for Alternative Press magazine. The day prior, Hoppus followers were informed that Mark had a bit of anxiety about the ordeal since he could feel a pimple developing on his nose. See what you’re missing?

Other than that, there is a several month long tour for the band that will kick off this summer that promises to be nothing less than grandiose. But don’t take my word for it, take Mark’s:

I am absolutely the most excited person in the world for the blink-182 tour this summer. End of story. Sooooo stoked!!!! Cannot. Wait.“

I know a lot of folks are not feeling the Twitter vibe, but you have to admit, it’s pretty awesome to be able to get news from artists you care about directly from the source. As a blogger, I suppose I should be threatened…but…whatevs!

Pirate Bay Retrial?

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

You may have heard recently about how four of the men behind the world famous Swedish torrent site ThePirateBay.org were jailed for conspiracy to break copyright law after international copyright holders (including major US studios) put a significant amount of legal pressure on Swedish authorities to do so.

ThePirateBay.org is one of several popular torrent sites that serve to assist users by connecting them with peers for the purpose of file sharing. Although file sharing itself is not necessarily illegal, it is used heavily for illegal purposes such as copyright infringment by distributing intellectual property such as songs or movies.

Today, Pirate Bay attorney Per Samuelson filed for a retrial, stating that presiding judge Tomas Norstrom was biased.

“Tomas Norstrom was biased during the trial”, Samuelson told the court earlier today. “Secondly, he neglected to inform the defendants and their lawyers of the facts that constituted the bias”.

The facts he was referring to concern judge Norstrom’s memberships to several copyright protection groups, including The Swedish Association for Copyright. As it turns out, the man who represented the film and music industry in the original trial, Peter Danowsky, who happens to sit on the board of The Swedish Association for Copyright.

Under the initial ruling, the four men are to be fined $3.6 million for damages as well as serve one year in jail. There has been no word yet from Swedish officials as to whether or not they will be granted a retrial.

Paul Dateh - Most Incredible Violinist on Earth

Monday, April 27th, 2009

Paul Dateh

Says me. Before I tell you more about this ridiculously talented young man, have a look at some of his work. At the time of this writing, this video has just over three million views on YouTube:

If you watched the video in its entirety (as you should have), then you will see why I would make such a bold claim in the title. This guy has some serious talent. Finally, someone is making the violin cool. If there had been a “YouTube” and a Paul Dateh when I was a kid just getting into music, maybe I would have taken up the violin, too.

The skill and dexterity that Paul possesses didn’t happen on accident. Beginning at the young age of four, he was classically trained on the violin for fourteen years. At the age of eighteen, realizing he had a passion for another area of music, Paul abruptly dropped his major in Violin Performance at USC’s prestigious Thornton’s School of Music in favor of their Jazz Studies program.

When you take a naturally musically gifted young man and give him 14 years of training in one of the most intensive and arguably most complex musical disciplines there is and then combine that with a world class education in the other most intensive musical discipline (jazz), the results are apparently what you saw in the video above.Today, Paul is not only an accomplished violinist but also an imaginative songwriter and he even has a voice to go with it. His playing can be heard in his own releases and in the work of several other artists as well, both mainstream and underground.

If you’d like more info about Paul Dateh, check out PaulDateh.com. You can also download some of his music there for free. If you really want to get closer to Paul, you could always follow him.

Green Day’s “Know Your Enemy” Music Video Premieres

Friday, April 24th, 2009

Green Day

Directed by Michael Cullen, the new video for the first single of the upcoming album “2st Century Breakdown” has been released. Check it out on MTV.com.

Complete with helicopters, giant blinding lights and pyrotechnics, the scale of this video does a good job of illustrating how big this little Northern Californian band has become over the years. The band performs on a bold three-pillar stage inside what appears to be a prison in the middle of downtown Los Angeles as they tear through the insanely catchy single “Know Your Enemy”.

The song barely hit iTunes on April 16th, and already there are dozens of videos on YouTube of kids playing the power chords of “Know Your Enemy” from their bedrooms. Some of them have even been removed by YouTube for copyright violation, which is hilarious.

The new Green Day album hits stores online and worldwide on May 15th, which is a Friday. Although most albums traditionally arrive in stores on Tuesdays, Green Day apparently can release an album on whatever damn day they feel like. Who says they’re not punk rock anymore?
