Trent Reznor Scores Dacid Fincher’s Facebook Film

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

Trent Reznor promised fans he’d keep making music despite retiring Nine Inch Nails from the road, and so far he’s delivered: his new band with wife Mariqueen Maandig, How to Destroy Angels, released a free EP earlier this summer, and now Reznor has revealed he’s recording the score for the upcoming David Fincher-directed Facebook film The Social Network with frequent collaborator Atticus Ross. “I’ve always loved David’s work but quite honestly I wondered what would draw him to tell that story,” Reznor writes on his official website. “When I actually read the script and realized what he was up to, I said goodbye to that free time I had planned.”

Reznor has produced a pair of soundtracks in the past, 1994’s Natural Born Killers for Oliver Stone and 1997’s Lost Highway for David Lynch, but The Social Network marks the first time the NIN leader has recorded a full score for a film. (The Fincher collaboration also continues Reznor’s streak of working with Oscar-nominated film directors.) In May, Reznor unveiled his end-credits music for the Japanese film Tetsuo: The Bullet Man, which will premiere in the U.S. at this year’s Comic-Con.

“The level of excellence that David operates on is inspiring and the entire process has been challenging and truly enjoyable,” Reznor writes. “As Atticus and I near the end of the scoring process, we’re looking forward to the next phase — distilling the large amount of music we’ve written for this down to a satisfying record (or two).” Reznor reports that the album should be available several weeks before the movie’s October 1st opening date. The film’s premiere also coincides with approximately when Reznor and Maandig are expecting their first child, the OC Weekly reports. Reznor has previously stated that How to Destroy Angels were planning a full-length album and tour for 2011 because “we’re all having babies this year.”

Though a film about a social network starring Justin Timberlake may seem like light fare for the NIN frontman, Reznor promises the film delivers: “It’s really fucking good. And dark!”

Sublime Performs at SmokeOut Festival with New Singer

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

13 years after Sublime founder Brad Nowell passed away, the long beach dub trio is back again, this time with a new singer by the name of Rome Ramirez.

Despite the fact that Rome was only 8 years old when Brad passed away, surviving members of the original Sublime lineup Eric Wilson and Bud Gaugh deemed him worthy of taking over the position of guitar and lead vocals. They made their first official appearance headlining the SmokeOut Festival this past Saturday in San Bernadino.

Although fans seemed very accepting of the newest Sublime member, not everyone is happy. The family of the late Bradley as well as his estate (and lawyers) are very much opposed to the band carrying on under the moniker “Sublime”.

“It was Brad’s expressed intention that no one use the name Sublime in any group that did not include him”, the Nowell estate officially declared. “Brad even registered the trademark ‘Sublime’ under his own name.”

However, remaining members Bud and Eric see it very differently.

“While we all mourn the passing of our brother and bandmate Bradley Nowell some thirteen years ago, Sublime still has a strong message of hope and love”, they responded. “Brad’s heirs apparently do not share this vision.”

Here is a clip of the newly reformed Sublime from the San Bernadino show with Ramirez on lead vocals performing the band’s classic hit, “Santeria”. Note Ramirez’s distinct vocal similarities to Brad Nowell.

The Specials Postpone London Shows

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

Sorry British skankers, due to lead singer Terry Hall coming down with a nasty throat infection, the Specials have had to postpone their upcoming 5-gig run at Brixton Academy in London.

Under doctors orders, Hall will need some time to recover so the 5 appearances will instead begin on May 16th, rather than May 6th as previously planned.

The Specials actually re-formed for this tour after a long breakup, so this is something UK fans have really been looking forward to. Hopefully Hall will be singing like his old self again and the newly scheduled shows will go off without a hitch.

This will be the first time the band has performed together since their split in 1981.

Jimi Hendrix To Rock Guitar Hero

Saturday, July 19th, 2008

Jimi Hendrix will finally take his rightful place in the guitar hero game franchise.  For all you fans out there who couldn’t believe that Hendrix hadn’t made an appearance, the delay was due to his estate not being able to locate the original masters.

Not to worry, multiple songs have been located and will be included in “Guitar Hero: World Tour.”  (more…)
