RIP Oasis

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

Truth be told, I haven’t cared about Oasis since 7th or 8th grade (circa 1994), but nonetheless they were a marginally successful band known worldwide so their undoing seems worth mentioning.

In August, singer Noel Gallagher announced that he was quitting the band. The official word was that the band would carry on minus one Gallagher brother. However, two months later, without any developments or signs that Oasis would recover, Liam Gallagher had the following to say:

“Oasis is no longer. I think we all know that.”

Well, I didn’t really know that. But thank you for clearing it up, Liam. That doesn’t seem like the proper way to announce the disbanding of a world famous pop/rock/whateveryoucallthem band. Liam, by now, you should have somehow realized what you’re not to do.

For what it’s worth, Oasis did have some darn catchy tunes in their day. Perhaps now we can begin to forget about their absurd “bigger than the Beatles” outburst and put that to rest. Well…maybe in a couple years, anyway.

New Paramore Single / Video

Monday, September 28th, 2009

Lead singer Hayley Williams and company have a new Paramore album on the way, and it hits the shelves tomorrow. The new album is entitled “Brand New Eyes”. Check out the first single “Ignorance” here in fancy music video form:

Apparently the song itself is about some drama the band has experienced within their own band. According to Williams, there is no bad blood about the song within the band. “We all sat down and talked it out, which was awesome”, she told Rolling Stone.

Paramore will be playing tomorrow night at the Fox Theater in Pomona, California to celebrate the release of the new album and to kick off their fall tour.

Janet Jackson Joins the Twitter Community

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

Nowadays, it’s hard to claim to be a celebrity if you don’t have a Twitter account. It’s pretty much mandatory. Luckily, Janet Jackson realized this in time, and is now a full fledged member of the tweeting community.

Off to an incredible start, at the time of this writing the legendary pop star and sister of the late great King of Pop already has over 47,000 followers. Her first official tweet was tweeted on August 3rd, saying simply “Hey you guys, Welcome, explore, Thank you for all the love”, followed by a link to her official site.

That brought her grand total tweets up to a whopping 2! So, she’s averaging about 23,500 followers per tweet. Not bad.

According to that second tweet, Jackson recently wrapped up filming a movie called “Why Did I Get Married, Too?”. She also briefly mentioned a new album coming in the near future.

To stay up to date with the goings on of Ms. Janet Jackson, be sure to follow her on Twitter.

Jill Sobule Talks Smack on Katy Perry

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

You’re probably wondering, “Who the hell is Jill Sobule”? Well, to be fair, Sobule enjoyed marginal success in the 90s as an alternative-era soft rocker. She also released a song in 1995 entitled, “I Kissed a Girl”, which just so happened to be the title of Katy Perry’s breakthrough hit single.

It has been some time since Perry’s single was unleashed on radio stations worldwide, which makes you wonder why Sobule would have waited so long to speak on the matter. Perhaps her royalty checks have become rather thin as of late? One cannot be sure.

In any event, in a recent interview, Sobule bashed Perry and openly doubted her talents. She even went as far as to call Katy Perry a “fucking little slut”.

What’s interesting (and Ms. Sobule will be happy to tell you) is that Katy Perry was signed by the same label A&R representative that signed Jill Sobule. Although Perry has stated in the past that the idea for the song came to her in a dream, it does seem a bit convenient.

Perry is a very active member of the Twitter community. Perhaps we’ll get a response on her profile sometime soon?

After the smashing success of his third studio album, “We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things”, Jason Mraz is now reportedly gearing up to follow it up with a live performance DVD.

“We’ve chosen a city on this tour”, Mraz divulged to Billboard. “But it’s too soon for us to announce it”.

The coffee shop crooner turned pop superstar attained record success with the release of the single “I’m Yours”.  To date, it is Mraz’s biggest hit, climbing all the way to #6 on the Billboard Hot 100. In total, “I’m Yours” spent an impressive 67 weeks on the Hot 100.

The current leg of Mraz’s tour will wrap up at the Hollywood Bowl on October 10th. Along the way, they’ve already been recording the audio for each gig as well as a little bit of video at select venues.

Eight other workers were injured by the collapse, five of them still in serious condition.

Two Panic! At The Disco Members Call it Quits

Monday, July 6th, 2009

Guitarist Ryan Ross and bass player Jon Walker have decided to move on from Panic! At The Disco, according to Billboard.com.

Although there is no word on any bad blood that may exist or have caused the split, this comes at a very inconvenient time for the remaining members of Panic! who will now need to piece their band back together in a hurry in time for upcoming tour dates. Singer Brendon Urie and drummer Spencer Smith only have less than a month to prepare for their next gig on August 4th at the Marcus Amphitheater in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They’ve also got an opening gig for No Doubt in San Diego on August 8th, not to mention they’re scheduled to play several shows with Blink 182 throughout the rest of August.

Previously we heard that new music from Panic! At The Disco would likely be released sometime this year. Although this hasn’t been retracted just yet, it seems pretty unlikely considering this recent announcement. To hear more about this from the horse’s mouth, check out this blog post by Brendon and Spencer on the band’s MySpace.

Celebrity Death Rumors Taking Over the Web

Monday, June 29th, 2009

Just about everyone is talking about how crazy it is that so many notable personalities have passed away in the past couple weeks. The propagators of online rumors are well aware of this, and have already begun to take full advantage.

So far we have lost Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcet, Michael Jackson, and now famed “pitchman” Billie Mays. However, according to numerous tweets and random “celebrity bloggers”, pop icons Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus are the latest ones to bite the dust.

What motivates the instigators of internet rumors to spread these lies? Well, it could be a number of things, ranging from web profits to just plain old entertainment value. However, if you’re the subject of one of these rumors, is it really such a bad thing?

Since Michael Jackson passed away, his record sales have exploded. He is already dominating the UK music charts, and radio play of the King of Pop’s music here in the United States has increased by a whopping 1,735% since the news of his death.

Of course, baseless internet rumors can’t be expected to make the sort of impact as the death of Michael Jackson, but I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that such false rumors do benefit the artists involved to some extent, even if it is just a microcosm of the aforementioned effect.

RIP The King of Pop

Friday, June 26th, 2009

It still has yet to really sink in. Possibly the most famous musician of our time has passed away. All controversies and eccentricities aside, you can’t deny the fact that Michael Jackson was quite possibly the greatest entertainer of the 20th century.

The details of his death have yet to be disclosed. Right now the music industry and music fans all over the world are in a state of collective shock.

According to CNN, sales of Michael Jackson’s music have soared since the news of his death yesterday.

I’ll admit I never really dug deep into Jackson’s music. But like so many others, I was a huge fan of his monster singles like Billie Jean, Beat It, Thriller, etc. Let us not forget that Thriller was the greatest selling album in history.

I know just about everyone is blogging about MJ right now. But if anything, that is just a testament to the incredible reach of his fame. His legacy will likely live on much longer than all of us.

The world has lost a truly great talent.

Disclaimer: I’m about seven beers deep.

NKOTB Won’t be Headed Down Under

Friday, June 19th, 2009

I can almost hear the symphony of breaking Aussie hearts all the way over here in the United States. Unfortunately, New Kids on the Block have canceled their Australian tour dates.

According to the newly reunited boy band, th  cancelation is not due to a lack of ticket sales, but rather the effect the ailing global economy has had on Australia.

“We can only assure you that when the recession’s stranglehold on the world’s economies eases up a bit, we will find a way to make this work,” Donnie Wahlberg told Billboard. You remember him, right? Marky Mark’s brother.

Back in their prime (read: teens) when New Kids on the Block were a fresh-faced, newly formed group, the band packed stadiums all around the world. In fact, before their break up in 1994, they had sold over 70 million albums worldwide. Unfortunately, for the New Kids, the star struck teenage girls that patronized them in the late 80s and early 90s are now for the most part in their 30s and don’t have much time for fanaticism anymore. Especially the Australian ones.
