New Paramore Single / Video

Monday, September 28th, 2009

Lead singer Hayley Williams and company have a new Paramore album on the way, and it hits the shelves tomorrow. The new album is entitled “Brand New Eyes”. Check out the first single “Ignorance” here in fancy music video form:

Apparently the song itself is about some drama the band has experienced within their own band. According to Williams, there is no bad blood about the song within the band. “We all sat down and talked it out, which was awesome”, she told Rolling Stone.

Paramore will be playing tomorrow night at the Fox Theater in Pomona, California to celebrate the release of the new album and to kick off their fall tour.

AFI CD Release Show @ the Roxy

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

AFI has a new album on the way called “Crash Love”. The new record hits the shelves (the real ones and the digital ones) on Tuesday, September 29th. After rumors had circulated about an official CD release party taking place at a club in LA, it has now been confirmed that Davey Havok and company will be putting on a special CD release show at the Roxy Theater on Sunset Blvd in West Hollywood on the night of the release.

Local LA radio station KROQ is pretty much the only way to get tickets to this event. Check out their site for details on how to win tickets. Tickets are currently only being given away to Southern California residents.

Since the Roxy is such a small, intimate venue, obviously there is a lot of demand to be there Tuesday night for the release of AFI’s 8th studio album. In fact, the demand is so high, some band members are apparently having trouble figuring out who to put on their guest list.

From bassist Hunter Burgan’s twitter:

Sorting out my guest list for the @AFI roxy show is much harder than anticipated. I wish I could put EVERYONE on the list!”

Is Tom Delonge’s Heart Still in Blink 182?

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

I must admit I was one of the many who really wanted to see Blink 182 reunite. After all, Dude Ranch and Enema of the State were like the soundtrack of my high school days, so it’s only natural I would want to be able to recapture those times via a Blink reunion.

Well, now that it has finally happened, I have to say it hasn’t really lived up to my expectations. I can only hope that the three pop-punk superstars that comprise Blink 182 are just trying to get back into their groove, but from what I’ve seen, the chemistry just isn’t there anymore.

I recently watched the reunited band play live on the Jimmy Kimmel show. To be quite honest, it sounded pretty rough around the edges. However, I’ve seen Blink in the past when their performance sounded awful but they still managed to put on an awesome and entertaining show. This time, it seemed like bassist/vocalist Mark Hoppus and drummer Travis Barker were very much in synch, but guitarist/vocalist Tom DeLonge was somewhere else.

In fact, he doesn’t even look like he belongs in the band. Tom used to wear his Fender Strat real low and dress like…well, the rest of the band. Now he looks like a futuristic fighter jet pilot and has his much more “grown up” Gibson signature hollow body guitar is worn at nearly a Paul McCartney height.

Of course, this new look was all part of Tom’s post-Blink project, Angels & Airwaves. Although Mark and Travis stuck more to the Blink formula/image, Tom sort of went off in a direction that we can only assume he had wanted to go in for some time but was restricted by the Blink image. Even if you look at Blink when they were promoting their last album, you could tell Tom wanted to appear more serious by the way he changed the way he dressed and the type of guitar he played.

Well, now Blink is supposedly back 100% and about to tour around the world and play for fans that have been waiting for this occasion for years. But even while all this is going on, Tom is still preoccupied with his Angels & Airwaves project.

Tom was the one that wanted to break Blink 182 up in the first place. It seems odd to me that he would be willing to commit to this reunion but then appear so apathetic about it. But don’t get me wrong, I want to see them succeed as much as any other fan does. I just wish it was like it used to be.

…Sort of how I secretly wish I could be back in high school again. Don’t tell anyone that, though.

Rancid to Tour with Rise Against

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

Like 90s punk rock? Like 2000s punk rock? Well you’re in luck, because Rancid is teaming up with Rise Against to create yet another amazing tour for this summer. Rise Against lead singer Tim McIlrath is a long-time devout fan of Rancid, so he is understandably quite excited about the upcoming gigs.

“Without them paving the way for us, who knows where we would be”, McIlrath told Billboard. “It’s something we never saw happening; it was kind of like a fantasy idea, and I can’t believe it all came together to happen.”

Come to think of it, it only makes sense that fans of Rancid would be fans of Rise against, and vice versa. After all, if you’re browsing through the “R” cds at Best Buy or the “R” bands on iTunes, you’re bound to come across both bands.

The tour will kick off June 4th in Vancouver at the Pacific Coliseum. Check out Rancid’s MySpace for more tour details.

Alkaline Trio Goes Back to the Old School

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

Alkaline Trio

There was a time when Alkaline Trio put out punk records. Then, somewhere along the way, they started morphing into more of a rock band. This progression is not unlike what we saw happen with Green Day over the years. However, at a time when Green Day is embracing their “rockstar” status, Alkaline Trio is instead revisiting their punk rock roots.

According to lead singer/guitarist Matt Skiba, the band has been banging out songs for the follow up to last year’s “Agony & Irony”, and they hope to be recording the new material sometime this July. “We kind of want to make a punk rock record,” Skiba told Billboard. “That’s how we started as a band, and over the years I think we evolved into kind of more of a rock band with punk roots.”

Since Alkaline Trio is currently on tour, it has given the band an opportunity to test out some of this newer material in front of live audiences. This will help them decide which tracks make the cut when it’s time to record.

Although their last album was released on Epic, the band requested that they be released from their contract which obligated them to make one more record for them. The label obliged, and this time around Alkaline Trio is going to be releasing their album on their very own label. Obviously this gives them complete creative control, which may also explain the abrupt transition back to more punk rock based music.

If you want to keep an eye on Alkaline Trio, be sure to check their MySpace regularly for updates.

Big Things in the Works for Blink-182 According to Mark Hoppus

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Mark Hoppus Twitter Pic

It may seem that newly re-formed Blink 182 has been relatively quiet since they announced their reunion at the Grammys, but rest assured, they have all sorts of fun in store for all of you deprived Blink fans.

If you need proof, all you need to do is follow Mark Hoppus on Twitter. Mark does a great job of constantly updating his massive army of followers about what is going on with Blink 182 (as well as a bunch of other stuff).

In fact, just the other day Blink 182 had a three hour photo shoot for Alternative Press magazine. The day prior, Hoppus followers were informed that Mark had a bit of anxiety about the ordeal since he could feel a pimple developing on his nose. See what you’re missing?

Other than that, there is a several month long tour for the band that will kick off this summer that promises to be nothing less than grandiose. But don’t take my word for it, take Mark’s:

I am absolutely the most excited person in the world for the blink-182 tour this summer. End of story. Sooooo stoked!!!! Cannot. Wait.“

I know a lot of folks are not feeling the Twitter vibe, but you have to admit, it’s pretty awesome to be able to get news from artists you care about directly from the source. As a blogger, I suppose I should be threatened…but…whatevs!

Green Day’s “Know Your Enemy” Music Video Premieres

Friday, April 24th, 2009

Green Day

Directed by Michael Cullen, the new video for the first single of the upcoming album “2st Century Breakdown” has been released. Check it out on MTV.com.

Complete with helicopters, giant blinding lights and pyrotechnics, the scale of this video does a good job of illustrating how big this little Northern Californian band has become over the years. The band performs on a bold three-pillar stage inside what appears to be a prison in the middle of downtown Los Angeles as they tear through the insanely catchy single “Know Your Enemy”.

The song barely hit iTunes on April 16th, and already there are dozens of videos on YouTube of kids playing the power chords of “Know Your Enemy” from their bedrooms. Some of them have even been removed by YouTube for copyright violation, which is hilarious.

The new Green Day album hits stores online and worldwide on May 15th, which is a Friday. Although most albums traditionally arrive in stores on Tuesdays, Green Day apparently can release an album on whatever damn day they feel like. Who says they’re not punk rock anymore?

NOFX News

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

The current featured band over on MySpace Transmissions is a little punk outfit you may have heard of called NOFX. There are five exclusive in-studio performance videos as well as interviews with the band and even interviews with their road crew.

Although most road crews tend to stay very much behind the scenes and out of the public eye, the situation is a bit different for the NOFX crew. Since the airing of Fuse TV’s documentary show “NOFX: Backstage Passport“, the crew has received worldwide exposure and they’ve even admitted to being recognized in public for it. The show is actually pretty awesome. If you don’t get Fuse you can watch clips from the show online at Fuse.tv with a few annoying advertisements.

NOFX has been going at it virtually non-stop since they formed in Los Angeles in 1983 (they now live in the San Francisco Bay Area). They’re on the road at the present time in France, soon to hit a few spots in the UK and returning to the states for even more shows in June through August, only to get back on a plane and head to Australia to rock out with the Aussies.

They’ve got a new album coming out on the 28th called “Coaster”. This will be their 12th studio album. Singer Fat Mike says the name “Coaster” was inspired by the warehouse of his record label “Fat Wreck Chords”, where instead of housing CDs he has realized that they are now storing “coasters”, due to the steep decline in physical CD sales in recent years.

I’ve had the priviledge of seeing NOFX perform twice, and I was blown away each time. For a band that would have you believe they never practice, they certainly have their live act together. This is probably due to the fact that practicing is unnecessary when you’re on tour and constantly playing the majority of the year.

To hear the single “The Quitter” from their upcoming new album, check out their MySpace.

How Come You Haven’t Heard of The Tattle Tales?

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

Seriously, what gives? You like good music, right? Allow me to help you get acquainted…

This five-piece pop/rock group from Rockland County, NY has some of the catchiest little tunes you’ll ever lay your ears on. Featuring both male and female vocals, they even throw in a healthy amount of keyboards to jazz it up a bit. Unlike most bands that attempt to dominate their genre and fail, The Tattle Tales actually arrange excellent pop-rock gems and decorate them with unforgettable melodies that are then sprinkled with a dash of vocal harmony.

After you’re done with this complimentary article, you will undoubtedly wish to check out their MySpace. Once you get there, I recommend you check out the track “Lucky Girl”. Talk about a singalong song…that one really hits the spot. The singalong spot, that is.

A lot of new music coming out these days is gloomy and rather boring. The Tattle Tales are helping everyone remember that music is supposed to be fun, and I appreciate them for that.

Are the five songs on their MySpace simply not enough for you? Well, hopefully you can be patient. The Tattle Tales are currently in the process of writing material for a new album. Maybe if you send them a message and let them know you would like them to pick up the pace a little bit, that will help speed things along?
