Smashing Pumpkins Frontman Collapses On Stage

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

THE SMASHING PUMPKINS frontman Billy Corgan collapsed on stage this past Wednesday night (July 21) at the Ritz Ybor in Tampa, Florida.

The singer reportedly felt dizzy during a rendition of the band’s 1995 single, “Bullet With Butterfly Wings”, before stumbling, then blacking out and falling to the ground. (See video footage of the incident below.)

According to Spinner.com, Corgan wrote on his Twitter account afterwards that he had no memory of the incident, nor was it a deliberate part of the show. He said, “For those who saw me fall last night during ‘Bullet’, that wasn’t a stage move or clumsiness. That was me blacking out and wiping out.”

He added, “I have no memory of falling against the drum riser and my guitar cabinet,” he added, “but I can tell you I’ve got quite a good bruise [and] am moving slow.”

The band is set to continue its U.S. tour tonight in Knoxville, Tennessee.

As previously reported, Corgan took issue with bands who reform and don’t record new material, as well as fans who don’t want to hear new music, in a new interview with RollingStone.com. When asked about some of his peers just going out and playing the hits, Corgan replied, “I’ve been in contact with those bands, as a fan and in many cases as a peer. I say to them, ‘Please write new music. We need you.’ When I got the PUMPKINS back I made it very clear — it’s this way or no way. If I walked onstage tonight and there were 20 people out there, I (still wouldn’t) go back and like ring up anybody that used to be in the band . . . I will never, ever, be that guy.”

Corgan added, “I could put out 40 songs and they’d be saying, ‘Eh, not as good as (1995 album) ‘Mellon Collie’. Half of those fucking jerkos would have us playing all of (1993 effort) ‘Siamese Dream’ on this tour.”

Corgan admitted he occasionally reads posts online from what he calls the band’s “hardcore fan base,” but said, “They are stuck in ‘93. It’s 17 years (later) and I don’t know what they expect to have happen . . . the thing that I find really insulting is there’s a deeper message there which is ‘You’ll never be better.’”

The current PUMPKINS lineup features no founding members except for Corgan, who said about the original version of the group, “Believe me, if that band had anything left in it, not only would I do it because it would be creatively interesting, but it would be incredibly financially lucrative. People say, ‘Well come on, just shake hands backstage and ride in separate buses’ . . . I’m not gonna be in a band with people who don’t like me.”

The PUMPKINS are supporting a newly released EP of tracks from their ongoing recording project, “Teargarden by Kaleidyscope”, a 44-song opus that will be released in stages over the next two years.

Vinnie Pauls Toilets to be Auctioned

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

Decibel magazine’s J. Bennett recently spoke with former PANTERA drummer and current HELLYEAH sticksman Vinnie Paul Abbott regarding Vinnie’s propensity of auctioning bizarre person items on eBay. An excerpt from the conversation follows below.

Decibel: Over the last couple of years, you’ve put your oven and your first cell phone on eBay

Vinnie Paul: Yeah, that was just comedy, dude. Anybody who thinks I’m hurtin’ for money and I did that for any reason other than just for the fun of it is crazy. The oven was sitting out by the side of my house because I replaced it, and a friend of mine, Video Bob, who works for me at my label, said, “Why don’t we put it on eBay?” And it was hilarious how much press coverage it got. The thing didn’t even work, and I wound up getting $1,000 for it. The guy drove down from Seattle in his truck to pick it up, and I autographed it for him. He was on cloud nine, you know? So, it was just something we did for fun. Anybody takes it any other way, they just don’t know me.

Decibel: What happened with the cell phone?

Vinnie Paul: Oh, that was even funnier. I was cleaning out my house when I found it. It was one of the first cell phones they ever made, and it was the size of a shoe. We were all just laughing at it. And, of course, Video Bob happened to be over again, so he was like, “Dude, let’s put it on eBay!” I think I got about five or six hundred bucks for the damn thing.

Decibel: What are you gonna auction off next?

Vinnie Paul: Actually, you’ll be the first person I’ve told this to, but I’m seriously thinking about putting my toilets up there. My new house I bought in Vegas, I didn’t like the toilets it came with. They were kinda old-school and small and had those wooden seat caps, so I replaced ‘em all. And now I’ve got three toilets from my house in Vegas that I’m about to throw on eBay. I can’t wait to see the shitstorm that causes! [Laughs]

The full interview with Vinnie Paul is featured in the August issue of Decibel magazine, on newsstands now, and available for purchase here.

Monday, July 12th, 2010

According to Interbridge.com’s “The Late Night TV Page”, KISS will perform on the July 19 edition of “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno” on NBC-TV.

Continuing its ongoing support of aspiring artists, Guitar Center, the world’s largest musical instrument retailer, has announced that it has teamed up with KISS and leading digital media company for entertainment, Eventful, for a revolutionary music program: Guitar Center On-Stage, a competition that provides unsigned bands and artists the career-altering opportunity to open for KISS on their upcoming North American tour, The Hottest Show on Earth.

One band from each of twenty-two markets across the United States will be chosen to play at a KISS show. At the conclusion of the tour, KISS will choose the best of the twenty-two bands to receive the grand prize that includes a $10,000 Guitar Center shopping spree. Now through September 1, 2010, bands across the country are invited to register at GCOnstage.com.

Rock Band 3

Monday, June 14th, 2010

Rock fans who haven’t embraced music video games often share one complaint: the experience isn’t real enough. Harmonix and MTV Games, the makers of Rock Band have evidently got the message. Rock Band 3, due in time for the holidays, will attempt to approximate real-life rocking with the addition of a keyboard and the option to plug a full-size six-string Fender Squier Stratocaster into the game, USA Today reports.

The keyboard, which has been in development since late 2008, is a 25-key controller, playable both as a lap keyboard and mini-keytar. The instrument will operate on the same color-based note stream as the other instruments, with five keys corresponding to five colors. When plugged into a computer, the controller also serves as a MIDI keyboard. “This is a real instrument and a real device,” said senior designer Sylvain Dubrofsky. In addition to the keys, the game will support two background vocal tracks (like Rock Band: The Beatles and Rock Band: Green Day), bringing the total number of possible Rock Band 3 simultaneous players to seven.

Check out video game avatars of real-life rock heroes, from Kurt Cobain to Metallica.

In “Rock Band Pro” mode, the game replaces the color-based stream of notes with more realistic musical notations, and a pair of newly developed guitar models — both sold separately — help transform the video game experience into an actual rock experience: the Fender Squier Strat, with six strings, and a Fender Mustang Pro, which has a field of buttons in each fret. In both cases, built-in technology senses where players’ fingers are located along the fret. The guitar experience isn’t the only thing improved on “Pro”: Drummers will now see the addition of three cymbals and keyboards will work along a two-octave range for added difficulty.

The game will also boast an improved story mode with hundreds of goals. “It is a really great way to finish Rock Band in your way, based on your skill, and not on some predetermined path of songs,” Harmonix senior designer Dan Teasdale told USA Today. With the number of playable songs available through previous games and downloadable content ballooning to over 2,000 tracks by year’s end, Rock Band 3 will also include an improved song-sorting system, like “80’s metal songs” and “songs under three minutes,” as opposed to just an alphabetical scroll.

Rock Band 3 will come with an eclectic mix of 83 on-disc songs, including Phoenix’s “Lasso,” Night Ranger’s “Sister Christian,” the White Stripes’ “The Hardest Button to Button,” Them Crooked Vultures’ “Dead End Friends” and Dio’s “Rainbow in the Dark.” Rilo Kiley, Joan Jett, Metric, the Cure and Stone Temple Pilots will also feature on the on-disc set list.

All That Remains Put Down Finishing Touches

Monday, May 31st, 2010

Massachusetts metallers ALL THAT REMAINS are putting the finishing touches on the recording process for their fifth album, due this fall via Prosthetic Records/Razor & Tie.

Commented vocalist Phil Labonte: “The more these songs get into shape, the more excited I get. This isn’t ‘Overcome Two’. It’s not ‘The Fall Of Ideals Two’. It’s very dynamic, heavy, and experimental. We’ve always had songs that went into different directions and this disc will be no different.”

To engage fans in the recording process for the new CD, ALL THAT REMAINS members Phil Labonte (vocals), Oli Herbert (guitar), Mike Martin (guitar), Jeanne Sagan (bass) and Jason Costa (drums) have set up AllThatRemainsTV.com, a streaming video site set up in their recording studio. Fans can look to the band’s social networking sites for detailed broadcast schedules, giveaways, and weekly chat sessions, but the feed is constantly streaming and any of the band members as well as the album’s producer, Adam Dutkiewicz from KILLSWITCH ENGAGE, may pop into the chat room at a random time.

While fans wait for the new album, they can find several of their favorite songs from ALL THAT REMAINS‘ latest album, “Overcome”, on the Rock Band Network for the Xbox Marketplace. The new songs that are now available for download are “Days Without”, “Undone” and “Forever In Your Hands”.

ALL THAT REMAINS will embark on a five-date tour (from June 8 through June 1) with FEAR FACTORY throughout the Northeast/Tri-State area. Phil Labonte said, “We’re really pumped to be getting out on the road with FEAR FACTORY. We’re having an amazing time in the studio working on the new album but it’s always good to get out there in front of the fans and just perform. We’ve been cooped up in the studio so getting out on stage will be a nice break so once we get back in we’ll be recharged to finish this heavy-ass record. Arrghhhh!!!!”

ALL THAT REMAINS tour dates with FEAR FACTORY:

June 08 - South Burlington, VT - Higher Ground
June 09 - Portland, ME - Port City Music Hall
June 10 - Sayreville, NJ - Starland Ballroom
June 11 - Clifton Park, NY - Northern Lights
June 12 - Buffalo, NY - Town Ballroom

ALL THE REMAINS had its first Top 10 hit at rock radio with “Two Weeks”, a song from “Overcome”.
