Victoria Vox - Chameleon

Victoria Vox

If you don’t hear a whole lot about Victoria Vox in the near future, I have officially lost whatever faith I had left in the music industry.

Produced by Mike Tarantino, Victoria’s new album “Chameleon”, is really a breath of fresh air. It’s been a while since I’ve sat down and listened to something that really grabbed me. In fact, when I first followed a link to her website, I was hooked by the first song. I was so hooked that I didn’t dare click any of the links on the homepage for fear of interrupting the music. I later learned that you can navigate safely around there without the music stopping, so feel free to do so.

What makes her music so unique is not just the clever incorporation of ukulele, but also the lost art of genuinely GREAT songwriting. Several tracks on the album are definite ’single’ material.

Track #4, “The Bird Song”, sounds somewhat like the female response to Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours”, and features some rather interesting percussion. It also features a simple yet effective trumpet solo. What’s really special about the trumpet parts on “Chameleon”, is that there was never actually a trumpet in the studio. How’s that, you ask? Synthesizers? No! Victoria has actually mastered the art of mimicking the sounds of a trumpet, also known as the “mouth trumpet”. I had absolutely no idea that it wasn’t a real trumpet until I read that fact on her site.

Having experience as a French exchange student also paid off for Vox on this album, with the track “C’est Noye” being performed in the language of love. Another track you need to add to your playlist ASAP.

My favorite track on the album, both for the song itself and also for the lyrical content, has to be “Peeping Tomette”. It’s basically a fun little jig that illustrates the antics of a female peeping tom (aka peeping tomette) that is terrorizing the neighborhood. Definitely an original song topic if I’ve ever heard one. The chorus is one of the most unforgettable on the album. In fact, I’m humming it to myself right now. Oh, and  remember that mouth trumpet? Well, it makes another cameo on this track, and it even harmonizes with itself! Oh and speaking of stalking, Victoria is a part of the Twitter community if you’d like to stalk her.

Well, you probably have a pretty good idea how I feel about this album by now. It’s one of those albums you can just put on start to finish and enjoy it all the way through. I strongly urge you to better familiarize yourself with Victoria Vox. It’s your big chance to discover an awesome new artist before all of your friends.

You probably want to check her out pretty bad by now, so I’ll wrap this up and let you friend her and listen to a few songs on her MySpace. You’re welcome.
